Key Takeaways
- Prioritize a non-slip surface to ensure your hands and feet stay planted during challenging poses.
- Choose a mat with at least half an inch of thickness if your joints require extra cushioning on hard floors.
- Opt for high-density foam blocks to ensure they support your full body weight without compressing or warping.
- Check that your block edges are beveled for comfort, as sharp corners will dig into your palms during transitions.
- Verify that your mat comes with a sturdy carrying strap to simplify storage and transport between rooms.

More Details on Our Top Picks

Gaiam Supportive EVA Foam Block
If you struggle to reach the floor during standing poses, this block serves as a dependable extension of your own arm. It provides the firm platform you need to maintain proper alignment without compromising your posture.
The surface is soft yet grippy, keeping your hands steady even when you begin to sweat. While the foam is dense enough to support your full body weight, it lacks the heavy, grounded feel of a cork alternative.

-
Retrospec Solana Extra Thick Mat
You will appreciate the extra inch of padding if your knees or wrists typically ache on standard, thinner surfaces. This mat is designed for those who prioritize comfort over portability, acting like a soft landing pad for your home practice.
The non-slip surface stays put on most flooring, preventing the mat from sliding while you transition between poses. Be aware that the significant thickness makes it feel less stable during balancing postures, as your feet may sink slightly into the foam.

Gaiam Deep Purple Foam Block
Using a block like this allows you to modify your intensity by bringing the floor closer to you. It is a staple for beginners and advanced practitioners who want to refine their form during deeper stretches.
The high-density foam is rigid enough to provide solid feedback for your hands. While the purple finish is vibrant, keep in mind that foam can eventually show surface wear if you use it on rough outdoor surfaces.
